Meet Dr. Mark A. Matey, the Doctor Behind Your Nerve Pain Protocol
Dr. Mark A. Matey is the podiatrist and wound care specialist behind Peripheral Neuropathy Specialists in Jacksonville. He built this practice's approach to nerve pain after two decades of watching patients try treatment after treatment, at great expense, without anyone ever checking what was actually causing their symptoms.
Dr. Matey earned his degree from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in 1994, then completed a surgical residency at the Miami VA Medical Center, where he treated veterans dealing with peripheral neuropathy and wounds that wouldn't heal. That early work shaped the way he still practices today: find the real cause first, then choose the treatment.
If you're tired of guessing what's wrong with your nerves, or paying for treatments that never quite worked, talk to Dr. Matey's team about a free consultation and diagnostic evaluation to find out what's actually going on.

From Wound Care to Nerve Pain
Twenty Years of Treating the Hardest Cases
Dr. Matey graduated from Youngstown State University before earning his degree from the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in 1994. After his residency, he settled in Jacksonville, where the Baptist Medical Center recruited him to help open its Wound Care Institute, the first center in Northeast Florida to offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy for wound healing. There, he spent years working with patients whose nerve damage, poor circulation, and non-healing wounds were often tangled together, which is exactly the overlap Peripheral Neuropathy Specialists is built around today.
That background is also why Dr. Matey doesn't treat neuropathy as a single, one-size-fits-all condition. Nerve pain, poor circulation, and vascular disease frequently show up in the same patient at the same time, and treating only one of them rarely solves the whole problem. As the sole provider at Florida Foot and Ankle, which Peripheral Neuropathy Specialists is a division of, Dr. Matey has been named Bold City's Best Podiatrist three years running: 2018, 2019, and 2020.
Why This Practice Exists
A Protocol Built to Solve The Problem
Dr. Matey didn't set out to build a specialty neuropathy practice. He built one because he was tired of watching his own patients, people he'd treated for years and considered friends, come back to him after spending a lot of money on treatments elsewhere that never worked.
Time and time again, he saw patients pushed through the same protocol regardless of what was causing their symptoms, often without anyone ever checking whether an underlying vascular or venous problem was the real issue. So he built a different model: start with a comprehensive diagnostic workup, treat the root cause if one is found, and only then move to a nerve-specific protocol, with most of it covered by insurance rather than billed out-of-pocket.
It's a simpler standard than most patients are used to: know what's actually wrong before deciding how to treat it, and don't make patients pay a fortune to find out.
